You can find the Facebook page ID of any Facebook page by visiting that page, placing your mouse over the logo image (top left), right-clicking, and copying the "link destination" (or "link location"). It will be of the form

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?profile=1&id=199346521222

You'll see that the last argument is the page's ID number (&id=199346521222).

If you have your browser's status bar enabled, you can also simply hover over the logo, and the link will show up in the status bar (bottom left) or your browser window.

I'm trying to add a Facebook Like Box from the FB developer's social plugin page. The first thing the code asks me for is the "Facebook Page ID." Of course, when I click the help icon, it simply says "The ID of the Facebook page for this like box." Uh, thanks, that really explains it. Those wise guys.

Anyways, if anyone could help me find the ID of a Facebook page, I would be very grateful. By the way, the page is already aliased, so the ID doesn't show up in the URL as it does with un-aliased pages (those withour usernames).

Great question. The location of this setting has moved several times. As of the date of this writing, you can access it via Account (top left) > Edit Friends. In the left-hand column you'll see a "Lists" section. You should see your "limited profile" here. Click on it, then on "Edit List" above the center column, and finally, search for and click on members you want to add to your "limited profile." Click on the "save changes" button when you're done.

All the constant adjustments Facebook is making to its privacy settings are driving me bonkers. Don't get me wrong - I think more privacy fine tuning options are good, but it seems like every time they make an update it gets harder to find what I'm looking for.

Does anyone know where, currently, the setting is where I can add specific friends to my custom profile lists? For example, I have a "limited profile" list, members of which don't have access to my Wall. How can I add a specific friend or two to this list that's not yet on it?

Getting different #'s is strange. I got entirely different results (keyword phrase suggestions), which made me think they simply tailored the results to that Adwords account - maybe based on the ad campaigns I've done?

I got a letter in the mail recently that looks like a total scam to me. I'm wondering if anyone here can confirm, or if you've gotten a similar letter - please comment.

The letter came surface mail and is from ICLS.net. According to their website, they are the "Internet Corporation Listing Service." I didn't actually visit the website - I got this from the Google SERPs. They claim: "ICLS.NET is a search engine ranking and submission services firm. Our goal is to improve your rankings on search engines."

Hahaha! Don't make me laugh. They tried to get me to purchase a search engine listing for one of my domain names. Guess what? Search engine listings don't exist/ work anymore!

Just to save the next person the trouble, if you get a letter from ICLS.net, shred and recycle it immediately.

They wanted me to order their "internet listing" service for two of my domain names, with the claim that "with payment you will become a customer and receive domain name submission to 25 established search engines, quarterly search engine position and ranking reports for eight keyword/ phrase listings from 25 major search engines."

Here's the problem ICLS: There are only 3 major search engines that make up 99% of searches (Google, Yahoo, MSN). Here's the other problem - it does you 0% good to list with them.

ICLS.net wanted $65/ year/ domain name for this service. Don't fall for it folks!!

Looks like this may go against Google's TOS (Terms of Service) of allowing paid links. I think as long as the links are no-followed, the strategy may be legit, but if they're used to garner/ exchange "link credit" (ie. PageRank juice), then it's most certainly a violation of Google's TOS.

I think I've actually heard of people getting banned for this (selling text links). I would stay clear - it's probably not worth if for a couple hundred bucks or whatever they offer you...

I just got an email from a guy at More Digital, which claims to be a "UK based Digital Marketing Consultancy."

Here's the email (I substituted my domain name for privacy purposes):

Hi,

I work for More Digital; a UK based Digital Marketing Consultancy.

We represent clients interested in social media marketing on smaller sites with little or no existing advertising and we're currently looking for advertising partners.

Would you be interested in placing a small text-based ad on example.com?

We pay a fixed upfront annual fee which we will agree on with you. Once the ad is in place, payment is made within approximately 48 hours.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards,
Andrew Webster

I checked out MoreDigital.com and it appears to be a legitimate website. I'm trying to decide if I should reply and at least see what the offer is (ie. rates for the text-links) or simply ignore this. It is an unsolicited email (mailed to my domain's whois email address), so I'm of course a little suspicious and wary. Any thoughts?

guru on "Bulk Domain Name Search for .co.uk?"

Good question domainer. While I imagine there's probably several ways to do this, here's our approach:

Browse on over to Namecheap.com and select their "Bulk Search"

Copy and paste up to 30 domain names, without spaces, and including their extension (ie. exampledomain.co.uk, not example domain .co.uk)

A good way to get multiple domains into a well formatted list is to copy and paste your list of names (ie. "example domain", etc.) into one column of an Excel sheet. Then copy and paste the domain extension (ie. co.uk) into another column. In the third column, you'll want to concatenate (merge) the first two columns with the following command:
=CONCATENATE(A1,B1)

Finally, we'll want to remove the white space between the words. In a fourth column, use the function
=SUBSTITUTE(C1," ","")

to remove the whitespace. Drag all the columns down so the functions will be applied to your entire list. You'll end up with a list of domain names that are formatted properly and ready to import into NameCheap's bulk domain search box (remember you can import up to 30 at a time).

The WS Domain extension (ie. example.ws) was heavily marketed (via an MLM, ie. pyramid scheme) as an alternative to the dot com domain name, beginning in the late 1990's, by the company Global Domains International (GDI).

You're right in that the ws domain extension is much more popular than it should be. It hails from a tiny island in the South Pacific - Samoa, whose population numbers less than 200,000.

Regardless GDI used a pyramid/ commission structure to setup a multi-level sales force to get the word out on WS domains. As a result, quite a few people registered WS domains, and if you look at the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages), you'll find quite a few established sites with this extension.

Interestingly, country coded domain extensions are often used as an acronym - for example, the .tv extension could be used for television domains, the .us extension (United States) is a classic; used by the popular social media/ bookmarking site del.icio.us.

The WS extension could be used, for example, by anyone from the town of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It is a legitimate domain name, but I wouldn't focus too much energy on it. .COM is still king, and generally you want to get this, followed by your country domain extension. But most important are the keywords you select for your domain name. Read our articles on Keywords in Your Domain Name and Domain Name With or Without Hyphens? for insight into how to effectively choose a domain name for your business.

Here's how the domain expiration timeline works, in a nutshell:

After one year from the date of registration, a domain expires and enters the redemption period.

It stays in the domain redemption period for 30 days. During this time, a domain owner can still renew their domain name, usually for an additional fee (we've seen the fee range from $50 up to several hundred, depending on the registrar)

After the 30 day redemption period, a domain enters a 5 day pending delete phase. During the pending delete phase, the domain is not accessible by anyone. During these 5 days the domain goes into the process of being returned for public registration. After the 5 day period, anyone can register it.

We should point out that some registrars (such as Fabulous.com) are putting domains in the redemption period into a DDN network where they may be purchased by buyers, with your authorization, before they enter the pending delete phase). Normally the registrar splits the proceed of a sale with the domain owner.

Here's my vote for the Ebay Partner Network. It takes some time setting up the ads, but it's worthwhile because you get paid based on impressions, not just clicks. The longer you're with the program, the higher your quality will rank, in my experience (so the more $$ you'll earn per impression).

We're in the same boat. There's quite a few alternatives to Amazon's program out there, and you're right - most of them pay better commissions. Your best bet is simply to create relationships with smaller merchants - they often offer better incentives.

As for the best network to use (for a large amount of products) besides Amazon - there is the Ebay Partner Network, they recently changed their payment structure to pay based on visitors sent (clicks), instead of products sold. Most of the larger shopping sites, such as shopping.com, PriceGrabber, PriceRunner, ShopZilla, etc. will have affiliate programs. Your best bet is to visit a site you like and see if it has an affiliate program.

And then of course there's the affiliate networks - CJ, oneNetwork, Clickbank, Connect Commerce (Google), etc., where you can look up individual products and merchants and sell products based on their individual commission structures.

For the time being I would just use their simple (basic) uploader. Facebook apps are known to have issues that should resolve over time. if you're still having this problem in a few weeks, feel free to post back and we can take a closer look at your specific situation.

I live in NC and one of our main affiliate program's, Amazon.com's associate program, was axed as a result of an Affiliate Tax law that made it into the budget this year. As much as that upsets me, I'm starting to realize that Amazon was paying measly commissions anyways. On top of that, it seems like it's not the best idea to have all my eggs in one affiliate basket, as this situation clearly shows.

So my question is - what is everyone using in lieu of Amazon? I heard there were thousands of affiliate programs closed in NC, so there must be quite a few of you out there that have found alternatives to Amazon?

I'm trying to upload photos using Facebook's upload utility. I had to restart Internet Explorer to get the "Active X" thing to pop-up. I did that, and now I finally see the upload utility. I'm able to browse my PC and select photos for upload. They upload all the way and then the program crashes, along with the webpage.

The second time I tried the Facebook uploader it finished, but then stayed stuck at "waiting for response from server." No matter how long I wait it doesn't seem to get past this step. I ended up using the basic (manual) uploader, but since you can only do 5 at a time this takes forever when you have dozens of photos. Is anyone else experiencing the response from server problem/ or have an idea as to how to get it to work?

Hi searcher,

Once you launch an Adwords campaign you'll become very familiar with destination URL's. Your destination URL is the URL your users will be taken to when they click on your Adwords ad. Your display URL is the URL that appears below your ad.

To see if auto-tagging works, simply append ?gclid=123xyz (ie. example.com/?gclid=123xyz) to your destination URL and see if you are able to arrive at that URL (ie. don't get a page not found error).

I'm trying to sync up Google Adwords with Google Analytics, and it's asking me if I want to auto-tag my destination URL. To do this, I'm supposed to carry out a test first to see if auto-tagging works, but I can't figure out what they mean by my destination URL?
